A DECADE ago, Mia Freedman was one of the country's most powerful and provocative magazine editors. As editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, Cleo and Dolly, she chased circulation gains with sexually explicit "sealed sections".
Today, at 38, Freedman is deeply concerned about the harmful effects on children of what feminists have dubbed "hypersexual" or "raunch" culture.

At first glance, sex and the environment don’t make obvious bedfellows. How can the answer to our environmental problems – global warming, access to fresh water, ecological sustainability, and the use of fossil fuels – possibly be found between the satin sheets of lovers? According to a growing number of greenies, free love may just save the world. In her newest book, Gaia: The New Politics of Love, author Serena Anderlini-D’Onofrio attempts to lay the groundwork for this premise.
Fox on Sex: 'Big Love:' The Different Kinds of Polyamory

Swinging saves you from cheating – there’s no lies and deception. It’s letting people have the variety they crave, but their partners get to have power and choice in the matter.”
— Danielle, 31*
“If done right, it can keep relationships together, rather than add to the statistics of divorce or miserable deceptive marriages.”
— Jonathan, 46*
With so much talk about cheating, sex addiction and horny housewife shows, I've been getting a lot of mail asking questions that span from inane to fantastic.
How does polyamory (having multiple intimate relationships simultaneously, with full consent) differ from swinging? Are swingers nudists? (Not necessarily, though I am sure some nudists might swing). Are bondage and S&M essential parts of swinging? (Nope, not essential). And then there are the numerous e-mails I get that about “cuckolding” (men who like watching their wives having sex, which might have an undercurrent of psychological humiliation to it).
“While the word ‘swinging’ may conjure images of hairy hippies for you, there is no profile of an ‘average’ swinging couple,” said Lola, president of HedoOnline.com, who is also a writer for "Penthouse" and an alternative lifestyle educator. “Fortune 500 owners, CEOs, people in law enforcement -- they don’t fit any mold at all except that everyone is very polite and open-minded.”

TUESDAY, March 9 (HealthDay News) -- People who consider themselves liberals or atheists tend to have higher IQs than those who are more religious or conservative, a new study suggests.
Study links intelligence test scores with key beliefs and male monogamHigher IQs also seem to make men less likely to cheat. Men with higher IQs place a higher value on sexual fidelity than men with lower IQs, although the same association with intelligence and monogamy was not found in women, according to the study.
The reasons underlying the differences can be explained by evolution, contends study author Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
In evolutionary terms, religion stems from humans' tendency to try to make sense of natural phenomenon. "Humans are evolutionarily designed to be paranoid, and they believe in God because they are paranoid," Kanazawa said. "This innate bias toward paranoia served humans well when self-preservation and protection of their families and clans depended on extreme vigilance to all potential dangers."
Likewise, humans have probably also evolved to have a natural tendency toward being conservative, which Kanazawa defines as having a strong preference toward caring for relatives and friends.

Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, clearly made an impression on the children of Lakiya during her visit. "Barbie's here!" cried one. In her bright pink dress, Biden stood out against the desert landscape of this Bedouin town. She would probably have been flattered to hear the women, clad in traditional robes, asking each other where she bought it.
Biden toured a compound belonging to the nonprofit organization Sidreh, where dozens of Bedouin women have sought empowerment and equality in recent years through projects run by various organizations. These include a weaving project sponsored by the New Israel Fund that the U.S. government also helps finance.
"It's important to us to show what these women have achieved in recent years, to break the stigma that 'Bedouin' mean nothing but 'polygamy,'" said Hanan al-Sana, who runs educational programs for Sidreh. "We've lowered the illiteracy rate, we employ 70 women and even university studies are no longer out of reach."
Now, about this bias, here are the personal reasons I think it’s unfair to coerce a women into doing it: Marriage today (I guess for most of time) is not just a circumstantial arrangement; it is an emotional bond, based on trust and joint goals, lifestyles, extended family bonds etc. Joint and mutual sacrifice for joint and mutual goals.
I’ve had some thoughts swirling around this for some time now. A recent FB note by a friend, a fairly long Gmail thread, and a Halqa presentation by someone else gave me the nudge to sit down on this. It’s seen as a controversial subject, polygamy in Islam. I don’t think it should be controversial, I haven’t seen anyone flat out say it’s forbidden, but I have seen plenty of people describe it as a religious virtue.
It seems to be a matter of individual choice. You can choose to do it, or choose not to.I initially thought I’d present the opposing views on this in a clinical way, merely stating both views without (too much of) my opinion on the matter. But the more websites I read, the more I realised this was impossible. So subjective bombs away.
Just to repeat, no one can definitively say it’s not allowed. Or even look down on those who do it. But on the same note, the converse applies, those who refuse, should have that freedom without the blackmail of being anti-religious, or counter-virtue.
I wasn’t certain whether refusing was being anti-Islamic, so I kept quiet on this, but it seems Tariq Ramadan (who’s views I like), as well as others , have stated publically that women are allowed to refuse upfront to this. SO I’m more comfortable in what I’m about to say.
When times are tough it’s easier to pick on people than to fix the economy, says solomonsydelle.Very enlightening to know the various perspectives from the continent on the charged homophobic rhetoric spewing forth from Africa's 'leaders'. Homophobia is definitely the problem, and during these tough economic times, it is easy and convenient to pick on those considered the 'other' instead of focusing on how to make life better for the collective.
Per Zuma, I confess that words fail me. While I am strongly against polygamy, I recognise the rights of adults to willingly participate in it, particularly as it is legal in many places. I just can't get over the fact that given the HIV/AIDS rates in South Africa, his last court case (which involved allegations of unprotected sex with a young girl) and his current position as president, he would have the time to have an affair with a woman other than his many wives and even produce another child. Where does he find the time?

Where was this women’s empowerment when the rights of muslim women were being sacrificed at the altar of appeasement of fundamentalist Islam in the Shah Bano case by the Congress party?
Does the Congress party have any right to talk about women’s empowerment while it opposes uniform civil code and has pushed a section of women into legalised polygamy?
Wouldn't you know it? Just as the popular press is getting up to speed with the idea that older women enjoy sex – a notion so scary that some have been dubbed "cougars" – a new piece of research suggests that men can expect a longer and more satisfying sex life than women.
